LAS VEGAS. Upon assuming leadership Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark navigated the conference through a period of ambiguity following the departure of members Texas and Oklahoma. Looking ahead two years the Big 12 has evolved into an innovative league showcasing its football offerings as the ” competitive, in the nation.” Notable, among the teams contributing to this competitiveness is BYU, a university that has rapidly established its presence.
The Road to the Big 12
BYUs path, to joining the Big 12 started back in 2021 when ex Commissioner Bob Bowlsby invited them alongside Cincinnati, Houston and UCF. Bowlsby recognized the promise in BYU, a promise that has flourished under Yormarks guidance. Since taking on his role Yormark, an executive at ROC Nation has worked hand in hand with BYU leadership to support their shift, from Independence and the West Coast Conference to competing in the Power Four league
Embracing Innovation and Disruption
During an interview, with the Cougar Sports Saturday team at KSL Sports Yormark commended BYUs administration for their openness to his plans for the conference. He envisions sponsorship opportunities, involvement, from investors and aims to elevate the conference to a top tier status nationwide.
“BYU is truly remarkable. Leading the way ” Yormark expressed. “They have embraced innovation daring to think pushing boundaries and creating disruptions. They have been proactive and incredibly supportive of my ideas.”
BYUs current reputation stands in contrast, to its conservative image when it was considered for conference expansion almost twenty years ago. Nowadays BYU is recognized as a pioneer paving the way with ideas and a proactive stance, towards progress.
Competing at the Highest Level
BYUs athletic department has demonstrated its drive despite facing challenges, in their season in the Big 12 conference where the football team ended with a 5 7 record. The Cougars excelled, ranking 36th in the Directors Cup standings. Notable accomplishments include the mens basketball team securing place in the Big 12 and earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament after being projected to finish 13th. This remarkable performance positions BYU as the ranking university among the 16 schools, in the revamped Big 12 conference.
Strategic Growth in a Fast-Paced Environment
Yormark is recognized for his forward looking approach. He often stresses the importance of the 12 being daring and proactive while also staying true, to its origins. “I believe in taking steps and being assertive. We must also be mindful. It’s crucial not to lose sight of our history and to blend a mix of tradition with innovation. Having said that [BYU] has been allies and I’m grateful, for their backing ” Yormark remarked.
