Beverly Hills Cop

It’s hard to believe that its been quite a while since Eddie Murphy first graced the screen as Axel Foley in the 1984 hit movie “Beverly Hills Cop.”

Now, at 63 Murphy is back in “Beverly Hills Cop; Axel F ” proving that his wit and comedic talent are as sharp as ever.

The original movie was the grossing film of its year. Led to two sequels in 1987 and 1994. Despite attempts to bring Axel back, to cinemas it took until now to find the script and team.

Filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer, who worked on the films, alongside the Don Simpson understood the formula; “Let Eddie Murphy stay true to himself as Eddie and let Axel Foley be true to his character.”

This approach, combined with first time feature director Mark Molloy and a screenplay by police officer Will Beall along with Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten strikes the chords.

Australian director Molloy, known for his work including projects for Apple brings a perspective, to the franchise.

Beall, known for reviving cop movies, like “Bad Boys for Life ” brings authenticity and enthusiasm to the script.

Right from the start we see Axel back in his Detroit driving through neighborhoods to the sound of “The Heat Is On.”

The first major action scene unfolds at a hockey game showcasing Foleys intelligence and knack for taking charge as he thwarts a robbery, with an ally.

Things take a turn when Axels old Detroit partner, Jeffrey Friedman (played by Paul Reiser) decides to retire.

Foley tries to dissuade him even as he receives another assignment, in Beverly Hills. This time Foleys estranged daughter, Jane Saunders (played by Taylour Paige) becomes a figure.

As she tries to defend her accused client she finds herself in danger paving the way for Axel to intervene as both a police officer and a father. “Beverly Hills Cop; Axel F” blends action, comedy and heartfelt moments reaffirming Murphys timeless charm and Axel Foleys enduring legacy.
